TYPES OF CANVAS:
MATTE CANVAS: This canvas
finish provides a glare free image and the most texture of any surface. It
provides the traditional canvas appearance for your prints, however, it cannot
create the same level of detail that a glossy finish can. Matte canvas has the
highest levels of color saturation of any finish.
SATIN CANVAS: A satin canvas
is a mixture between matte and gloss finishes, it still has much of the texture
that matte does, while providing a high
er level of detail and glossy finish.
SEMI-GLOSS CANVAS: It is
slightly more glossy and provides less of a textured surface then that of a
satin canvas, it is another compromise between a matte and a glossy finish.
Both satin and semi-gloss canvas is designed to meet needs between that of a
strict matte or glossy finish.
Provides the highest possible level of detail of any
surface finish and the brightest colors, with a high level of reflection. It
does have a tendency to have a glare when it is exposed to direct light, which
is something to consider if you are placing it in the path of direct light.
Works great for applications where a high level of detail and color are wanted.
Note: All of our canvas
rolls are water resistant, however, we still do recommend varnishing the canvas
after printing. Varnishing increases the longevity of your prints by increasing
water and environmental resistance.
IMPORTANT QUALITIES OF A CANVAS ROLL:
PRESENCE OF OPTICAL BRIGHTENERS: The colors that are visible
on a canvas are a combination of both the inks used and the canvas itself. Many
canvases have added optical brighteners that are used to give the colors more
vibrance when initially printed, but these optical brighteners tend to fade
over time and create a yellowing of the image. Using a canvas that has low
levels of optical brighteners means that it will retain more of its original
color and have a longer lifespan.
WATER RESISTANCE: Many of our canvas rolls are water
resistant, however, we still recommend that a varnish be applied. This gives
increased longevity as it gives increased water resistance to the canvas, along
with protecting it against any other environmental forces that interact with
Note: The Premium Satin Canvas is
the only canvas that we recommend not laminating, as it designed to not need
ACID AND LIGNIN FREE: Canvas that has acid or lignin degrade
quicker over time as these elements eat away the canvas. Lignin is a naturally
occurring chemical in trees and is a key reason for yellowing of papers and
canvases. Removing this leads to the longevity of the canvas and is something
to look for when purchasing a canvas.
